Like many parts of the world, Bangkok is not immune to climate change. It even has one of the worst states during the heavy rains because the entire city seems to be submerged in water. Regardless, the urban project continues while the city is home to over 10 million people. In a recent report from Greenpeace, the city is at least 2 cm lower than the previous year and this is an annual observation. On the one hand, the Gulf of Thailand is rising by around 4 mm per year and the number is already above what is considered to be the global average. Needless to say, everyone including establishments such as business hotel in Sukhumvit is worried about what the future holds.

Bangkok is, at the moment, about 1.5 metres higher than sea level. This is a result of the floods that inflicted the city back in 2011 and another one in 2017 which killed more than a thousand in various countries including Bangladesh, India and Nepal. The issue is now at the forefront because of the rainwater floods that continue to submerge the city and the meeting recently by the United Nations held in Bangkok.

In answer to the problem of flooding since 2011, Kotchakorn Voraakhom, a Thai architect developed by the Centenary Park. It spans 11 acres and is located in Chulalongkorn University at the very heart of the city. The park is surrounded with grass and trees and the most remarkable feature is that water containers that were installed underground. Aside from the water containers, there is also a large pond in it that can contain millions of gallons of flood water.

The system works by storing water and using it during periods of drought but in case flooding occurs, the flood water is stored until such time that it has subsided. Only then will the flood water be released through the public sewage system.

Another park with the same functions will be constructed in Thammasat University. Voraakhom will be responsible for the project along with Land process, his architecture company. The park will be 36 acres and it will retain water the same way as the Centenary Park. This is a light at the end of the tunnel for residents and businesses such as business hotel in Sukhumvit as there is still hope for the city amidst the flooding problems.
