Why Vietnam Is Missing Out From The Lack Of Cruise Tourism

Many countries all over Asia are already reaping the rewards from the cruise tourism sector but this is not the case with Vietnam. Despite the tourism growth and the increase in accommodations such as a 5 star hotel in Saigon, the country is still missing out on this side of the tourism industry. Proof to this is the fact that cruise tourism only answers for 2 to 3 per cent of the yearly tourism revenue. This is the reason why many experts think it is a waste considering the long coastline of the nation which signifies that this market should be naturally successful in Vietnam.

Saigontourist is currently one of the top companies that are dominating the tourism industry of Vietnam which is why it is no wonder that they decided to take the first step in cruise tourism. Last year, they were able to attract a total of 475,000travellers from around the world which resulted to a year-on-year growth of about 12 per cent.

Aside from those figures, for the first two months of 2019, Saigontourist welcomed a large group of tourists. For instance, they assisted 3,500 Chinese travellers from Hong Kong as they tour the central city Da Nang located in the north. The same group also went to the capital of Hanoi aboard World Dream which is a cruise ship.

Prior to this achievement, Saigontourist also managed to serve around 11,500 tourists aboard the cruise ships Dream World and Celebrity Millennium which are both rated with five stars. The tourists are mainly from Hong Kong, Britain, United States and France who are interested to see the landscape of Vietnam.

There are many factors that prevent tourists aboard cruise ships from stopping in Vietnam including the not so attractive shopping malls, the inability to meet the luxury demands of the VIP passengers and the port infrastructure which needs to be improved in order to serve the cruise tourism better. The country has already invested in projects such as a 5 star hotel in Saigon but they failed to make ports that are suitable for hosting cruise ships apart from Ha Long Port which was inaugurated recently.
